Hello! If you're new to my writing and thinking about diving in or have enjoyed one of my books and want to find out a bit more, this is the best place to start. A lot of my books and series are connected. You can read about each individual book and series on their own dedicated page, but here you'll find a brief overview of my different worlds and how they fit together. I hope it all makes sense! I've published over 20 books now (oh, the days I've frittered away with my daydreams) and plan to keep on going for a while yet. I've always liked worlds that expand over a number of books, with characters, settings, themes reappearing. So, once you start exploring my worlds, don't be surprised to run into some old friends from time to time.

In the Absence of Light was my first series (and a good place to start) anything you see branded as In the Company of Shadows is a subsequent story set in the same historical vampire universe, but is a separate book/series from that original work. The other works listed below are set in different worlds and don't feature vampires!

in the absence of light

King of the Winter 8 small.jpg

Begin at the beginning with the first books I published (way back in 2012) - Caleb Cade, a thief and sharper of hearts, discovers a secret world of monsters and the mad men who hunt them in 18th century London. In the Absence of Light is a four book story of love, loss, vampires and the dark hearts of men. Set between 1679 and 1737, it features a number of characters who go on to appear in subsequent series, however it can be read independently of the others and enjoyed as a standalone work. The four novels that make up In the Absence of Light should be read consecutively.

In the Absence of Light is a complete work, and I have no current plans to continue this series.

rumville

Set in London in 1710, Rumville spins off directly from In the Absence of Light when a street prostitute awakes in a doorway with no memory of the previous night, but finds her health, youth and beauty restored.

The story partly interweaves with The Love of Monsters (the final book of In the Absence of Light) and a number of characters from the original feature in this series, along with an array of colourful new ones. The book can be read in isolation from In the Absence of Light, but I would recommend reading that series first.

Partly written in 18th century street slang, Rumville is an earthy exploration of London's underbelly alongside a tale of vampires, self-discovery and second chances.

Rumville is a complete work, and while there is scope to return for more, I have no immediate plans to continue this series.

the night's road

Red Company2 small.jpg

When a castle in a remote 17th century German barony is attacked, the survivors must decide whether to run or stand. But their attackers are not marauding soldiers looking to rape and pillage. They are something far worse.. And they have come for the baron's daughter...

So begins the The Night's Road, my third vampire series. Set in the Holy Roman Empire in 1630-31, at the height of the ruinous and blood-soaked Thirty Years War, the books exist in the same universe as the previous two vampire series and include some recurring characters. The books can be read independently of The previous two series, though if you enjoy the Night's Road there's much more to explore and enjoy in the earlier books.

The Night's Road is an ongoing work, and as of 2024 I'm writing the fifth instillment, as yet I don't know how many more books will make up this series.

novellas

To date I've published three novellas  within my vampire universe. The Burning and A House of the Dead are both set in 1630 prior to The Night's Road and act as prequels to that series. They are exclusively (and freely) available to subscribers of my occasional newsletter. They can be read completely independently of my other works and are a great introduction to my historical vampire universe.

Precious Things is available to buy and is set in 1827, a dark tale about the price a rich man is prepared to pay to avoid ruin, which can be read independently of my other vampire books.

hawker's drift

Burden of souls3ebv_edited.jpg

Set in a remote town whichmay, or may not, be in the American west of the late 19th century, the story weaves around a large and disparate set of characters and their interactions with the town's mayor, who may, or may not, be the Devil.

If you like big casts, multiple storylines, mysteries and adventure, then this could be the series for you.

There's not vampires in this one and the series if completely separate from all my other works.

This five book epic saga is complete and their are no current plans to return to the world of Hawker's Drift.

the sorrowsmith

The story of one woman's life, The Sorrowsmith follows Beatrice Clay from 1916 to 1953, the loss of her one true love, her marriage, moving to a isolated cottage by the sea, her children, the strange things that happen there and the slow realisation that either her abusive husband is a monster in more ways than one, or she is losing her mind.

The Sorrowsmith is a standalone work, however it is set in the same universe as the House of Shells. However, both books can be read independently of each other and there are no recurring characters.

the house of shells

When Jack Orford, an unhappily married, world weary  middle-aged man, escapes  to the seaside with his young lover, he expects nothing but to leave his cares behind him for a few days. But when his lover disappears he finds himself trapped on an other worldly shore populated by strange creatures, and that his desire to escape the real world may very well become permanent...

A standalone novel, The House of Shells does not form part of a series. Although it is set in the same universe as The Sorrowsmith, both novels can be read independently of each other.
